Dive Knife
Scuba diving is a fun way to explore many new and unique environments. In order to explore what is often new and unknown territory underwater you must be sure to equip yourself with the right tools for safety as well as convenience. One of the tools that can come in handy as a scuba diver is a dive knife. Dive knives are considered an optional accessory for scuba diving and while they are often not needed they can be life saving in some scuba situations.
The purpose for carrying a diving knife is not to fend off hungry predators or anything like that. In fact the best scuba diving knife to buy has a blunt or rounded tip simply because they are not used for “stabbing” anything. Diving knifes are most often used in situations of entanglement. If you are diving in an area with long kelp or seaweed that you may accidentally get caught in it is helpful to have a dive knife. Other uses for diving knives are to cut fishing lines or nets that can become tangled or block your path on a dive.
The reasons for having a diving knife are few but in certain unpredictable situations it is very good to have a good diving knife with you. If you decide that carrying a dive knife is something you would like to do you will want to purchase your own. Choosing the right diver knifes is important. You never want to choose a pointed or smooth bladed knife. Diving knives do not need to be pointed and are a hazard if they are as they can puncture your wet/dry suit or even worse a hose. You should look for a knife with a serrated blade as these are more durable, cut through tough objects more quickly and efficiently and will stay sharp longer.
Another important feature for your diving knife to have is to come with a case, which most do and a leg strap. Always strap your diving knife to your leg and not your arm as it can puncture or cut your breathing hoses which are not helpful when diving! Also buying a dive knife with a hard blunt handle is good for hammering and because you have a limited selection of tools underwater this can be helpful as well. You can really buy any type of metal for the blade, they do offer a titanium dive knife, which is made of the strongest metal you can buy, this is really necessary if you know you will be needing to cut through some pretty rough stuff while diving.
There are many, many different brands of diving knives to choose from, you can find any of these high quality reputable brands on line or in most diving stores; Tekna dive knife, Morse diver knife (including Morse diving equipment knife), Wenoka dive knife (including Wenoka big Squeeze dive knife), Vince diver knife, Oceanic dive knives and the Mark V. diver knife. All these models and brands come with top ratings and have a great reputation as being leaders on the market. It is important to do your own research though and really find out what type of knife you may need and what will suit you the best for your type of scuba diving.
